Have finally treated myself to an Apple iPad 2 (16GB 3G version). The device is awesome and I’m extremely pleased with my new gadget.
I did however get hit with a gotcha, so far I’ve been charging the iPad from Mains and USB from my MacMini. The problem comes when my battery needs charging and I plug into my Windows Laptop for the first time. As per the iPhone, iTunes springs into action syncing all my apps and settings. But the iPad will not charge, everything is working from iTunes and within Windows as expected.
On investigating the issue the problem seems to be that iPhones are charged at 500 milliamps where the iPad needs 1000 milliamps to charge, Windows 7 limits the milliamps that USB ports can use to charge devices.
The good news, there is a very easy work around / fix thanks to ASUS.
ASUS have released an application that resets the Windows USB milliamp limit to cater for the iPad, simply install the application and restart the computer and hey presto, the iPad now charges.
